PRESS RELEASE: May 2016: On Saturday May 7th, from 5 pm to midnight, thousands of cultural adventurers from Tallahassee and the surrounding regions will gather in the historic All Saints Arts District for the inaugural First Saturday Culture Crawl in an unprecedented celebration of community and culture. On that night, during Mother’s Day weekend, more than a dozen businesses throughout the district will host curated and free cultural performances in a variety of disciplines, staggered throughout the evening and appealing to many different audiences. Many other businesses will also be staging their own independent events. Some of the disciplines covered will include several genres of music, cinema, comedy, theatre and performance art, dance, ethnic culture, literature, and cuisine. While more will take place on this night than anyone could possibly experience, the event offerings are designed to appeal to many differing backgrounds, ethnicities, age groups and interest levels. There will be dedicated monthly spaces for high school and youth performances, for example, as well as Afro- Caribbean, Asian, European, and South American cultures. There will also be rotating performance space dedicated to senior citizen performance, disability perspectives, and alternative and emerging cultures – with an eye on intergenerational and “other community” dialogue. And there are also stages for all levels of performers, from beginner to expert. This innovative event is designed to catalyze stronger cultural movements in Tallahassee, to grow the rewards of culture in our daily lives, to support the local independent businesses that define All Saints, and to further solidify Tallahassee’s standing as a pre-eminent destination for cultural tourism in North Florida and the South East region. It has also been designed as a complement to the famous First Friday Gallery Hop hosted each month by Railroad Square – A 10-acre art park within All Saints. With the very different atmospheres of these back-to-back events, All Saints will become a weekend destination for cultural tourists of all ilks, while also ensuring that the entire first weekend of each month is dedicated to a community-wide celebration of culture and the arts. “Rather than focusing on how to make Tallahassee more like other cultural meccas like Asheville, Austin, Boulder or Portland, the district has focused instead on the need to look inward and to make Tallahassee more like Tallahassee,” said Joe Berg, President of the All Saints District Community Association, which is coordinating the event series. “When you think about all that All Saints has to offer – having the highest concentration of locally owned businesses, artists and studios, festivals, and outdoor artwork of any district in 130 miles in any direction -- we are that cultural mecca for North Florida. And we are in a unique position to help fertilize and strengthen the organic local culture that makes the Capital City – and All Saints – a one-of-a-kind gem that can’t be replicated anywhere else in the world.” One of the major artistic goals of the event is to create a platform for artistic expression and a stepping stone for up-and-coming artists in the region. “The cultural landscape in Tallahassee is somewhat fragmented geographically,” said Berg. “By bringing together so many performances, venues, and audiences on one night, we can create a coveted opportunity for many local artists, so that they can focus on their craft instead of finding venues and selling tickets. It’s all built in.” Each month, the district will publish in print and online the official “dance card” for attendees, so that they can plan out their path of adventure -- as performances will span happy hour, dinner, evening, and late night hours. In turn, so many diverse performances will create abundantly diverse crowds that will be passing each other on the street throughout the evening, laughing and sharing experiences in the venues, and making new friends and neighbors. Information about the inaugural event lineup will be posted in the week before event, and interested attendees can subscribe to receive the information directly at www.AllSaintsDistrict.org . Additionally, as this is a regular monthly event, performers in all disciplines and all experience levels are invited to submit their proposal for future performance to the event committee, using the submission form on the website. The event is sponsored by the All Saints District Community Association and its members and supporters, the individual businesses and venues participating, and is funded in part by the city of Tallahassee and the Community Redevelopment Agency. IHeartRadio and its five leading local broadcast stations are also media sponsors. |
